Valium is a pill used to treat anxiety disorders, alcohol withdrawal symptoms, muscle spasms, and seizures. It also used to provide sedation before medical procedures. It works by relaxing nerves and the brain hence resulting in a calming effect. Valium can be available in a liquid form. An overdose of Valium increases the risk of worse side effect and does not guarantee fast recovery.
Xanax is used to treat panic disorders, anxiety disorders and anxiety caused by depression. Xanax is a habit-forming drug thus addictive and should only be under prescription. Extreme misuse can cause overdose and eventually death. This medication acts on the brain and the central nervous system resulting in a calming effect. Xanax is administered in the hospital by doctor mostly in tablet form and should be consumed whole.
Valium, typically known as Diazepam takes a slower time to act than Xanax. On the other side Xanax, scientifically known as alprazolam is metabolized faster than Valium. Xanax also stays active for a shorter time than Valium hence having a shorter acting time. Xanax is a prescribed drug legally used to arrest panic disorder. On the other hand, Valium is not approved for panic disorder but is used to treat alcohol withdrawal symptoms. Valium can be available in a gel form, but Xanax is only available in liquid and tablet form. Diazepam is legally used to treat anxiety and depression children. Xanax effect lasts longer in older adults and is not suitable for use by persons under the age of 18 years.
Both Valium(Diazepam) and Xanax(Alprazolam) are mild tranquilizers. They fall under a class of drugs known as benzodiazepines. Benzodiazepines mode of action involves boosting the activity of the gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) neurotransmitters in the CNS. This way they help to curb anxiety and users with a low count of GABA could experience an anxiety disorder. Both Xanax and Valium are potential drugs of abuse. Pregnant and lactating mothers should not use these drugs as their active ingredients can be passed to the fetus or infant respectfully. Users should not quit using the drugs suddenly especially during this period. Drug tolerance, dependence, and addiction is common especially in instances of overdose, misuse or utilized for a considerably extended period.
Prolonged use of Xanax can trigger GIT side effects such as blurred vision, diarrhea, constipation, weight gain, increased or decreased appetite depending on the nature of the user’s GABA receptors. Other CNS effects may include anxiety, a sexual disorder such as increased libido, muscle twitching, memory impairment, hypo-tension and noticeable cognitive dysfunction.
On the other hand, effects of Valium use have been associated with effects such as memory loss, increased aggression and violence, lethargy, deprived motivation, impaired ability to perform daily activities, depression commonly manifested as mood swings and low blood pressure. Valium tolerance is common and can result in over dependence especially when consumed in doses higher than normal or used for considerably an extended period.
